Devotional 237: The River Flowing Out of Eden

Genesis 2:10–14; Psalm 46:4; John 7:38–39; Revelation 22:1

A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden and divided into four heads: Pishon, Gihon, Tigris, and Euphrates. The river signifies the flow of God’s Spirit, watering and supplying life.

Psalm 46:4 declares, “There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God.” John 7:38–39 reveals that this river is the Spirit flowing out of the believers’ innermost being. 

In Revelation 22:1, the river of life flows from the throne of God and the Lamb, watering the entire New Jerusalem.

The four rivers show the abundance and spread of God’s life, reaching every direction. God’s intention is that His life would not remain confined but flow out to water the whole earth.
