Devotional 238: The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil

Genesis 2:16–17; Romans 8:6; 1 Corinthians 8:1; Galatians 5:16–17

God commanded man to eat freely of every tree except the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, warning that eating it would result in death. This shows that man’s choice was not merely between right and wrong but between life and death.

Romans 8:6 explains that the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace. 1 Corinthians 8:1 reminds us that knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. The issue of this tree is independence from God, relying on self-knowledge instead of God’s life.

The lesson is clear: life is found only in partaking of Christ, while death is the result of living by self, independence, or mere knowledge.

Main Points:

  • God gave man a choice between the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge.
  • Eating of the Tree of Knowledge leads to death and separation.
  • Life is found only in Christ, not in independence or self-reliance.

Cross References:

  • Romans 8:6 – The mind set on the Spirit is life.
  • 1 Corinthians 8:1 – Knowledge puffs up, love builds up#

  • Deuteronomy 30:19 – Choose life, that you and your descendants may live.

Prayer Points:

Lord, keep me from living by self-reliance and independence.

Cause me to choose You as life daily.

Deliver me from mere knowledge without life.

Lord, train me to walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh.

Fill me with Your life so that I may build others in love, Amen.
