Devotional 278: The Clean and the Unclean

Genesis 7:2–3; Leviticus 11:1–3; Acts 10:14–15; 1 Peter 2:9

God commanded Noah to bring seven pairs of clean animals and two of every unclean. This distinction was made long before the law of Moses, showing that God already had a testimony of what was acceptable to Him. The clean animals were preserved in greater number because they would later be offered as sacrifices.

Experiencing Christ Commentary explains that the clean animals signify Christ in His various aspects as the offerings acceptable to God. The unclean signify fallen humanity and the sinful world.

God preserves both for His government, but His testimony is in the clean. For the believer, this means God wants us to live separated from uncleanness and offered wholly to Him.

Main Points:

  • God distinguishes between clean and unclean even before the law.
  • Clean animals signify Christ as God’s acceptable offering.
  • The church must live as God’s holy and separated testimony.

Cross References:

  • Leviticus 11:1–3 – Laws of clean and unclean animals.
  • Acts 10:14–15 – God cleanses what He accepts.
  • 1 Peter 2:9 – A holy nation to God.
  • Romans 12:1 – Present your bodies a living sacrifice.
  • Ephesians 5:27 – The church sanctified and cleansed.

Prayer Points:

Lord, make me clean and acceptable to You.

Thank You for Christ as my true offering.

Separate me from what is unclean in this age.

Lord, make the church a holy testimony of Your name.

Preserve me wholly for Your purpose, Amen.
