Genesis 6:14–16; Hebrews 11:7; John 10:9; 1 Peter 3:20–21
God instructed Noah to build an ark of gopher wood, covered with pitch inside and out, with rooms, windows, and a door. Every detail was given by God, for the ark was His appointed way of salvation.
Experiencing Christ Commentary shows that the ark is a full type of Christ as the refuge from judgment. The gopher wood signifies Christ’s incorruptible humanity, strong and able to bear us up.
The pitch (a covering) represents Christ’s redemption, sealing and protecting us from God’s judgment. The rooms speak of the church life, where we dwell together in Christ. The window points to vision, and the door signifies Christ Himself as the only way of salvation (John 10:9).
Just as the ark was God’s unique provision in Noah’s day, Christ is God’s unique provision today. There is no other ark, no other way of escape, but Christ Himself.
Main Points:
- The ark typifies Christ as our salvation.
- Wood = Christ’s humanity, Pitch = Christ’s redemption.
- The rooms, window, and door signify the church, vision, and Christ as the way.
Cross References:
