Devotional 262: The Pattern of Life and Death Continues

Genesis 5:6–20 (Seth through Jared); Psalm 39:5; Romans 6:23; John 10:10

The genealogy continues: Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared — each lived, begot sons and daughters, and died. The refrain “and he died” resounds, marking the reign of death in Adam’s line.

Experiencing Christ Commentary notes that this repeated phrase shows sin’s universal effect. No matter the years lived, death comes.

Yet within this cycle, God preserved a testimony of life—men like Enosh (whose name means frail), reminding us to call on the Lord (Genesis 4:26).

Main Points:

  • Humanity’s story apart from Christ is “and he died.”
  • Even the longest life cannot escape death.
  • God preserves a testimony of life within death’s reign.

Cross References:

  • Psalm 39:5 – Every man is a vapor.
  • Romans 6:23 – Wages of sin is death.
  • John 10:10 – Christ came to give abundant life.
  • James 4:14 – Life is a vapor that vanishes.
  • Philippians 1:21 – To live is Christ, to die is gain.

Prayer Points:

Lord, make me aware of life’s brevity.

Deliver me from trusting in long years.

Fill me with the reality of Your eternal life.

Lord, preserve me as a testimony of life amid death.

Keep me calling on Your name daily, Amen.
