Devotional 250: Cain and Abel’s Offerings

Genesis 4:3–5; Hebrews 11:4; 1 John 3:12; Isaiah 1:11–17

Cain offered fruit from the ground, while Abel brought the firstlings of his flock with their fat. God accepted Abel’s offering but rejected Cain’s. Abel’s offering was by faith, acknowledging the need for a substitutionary sacrifice. Cain’s offering was the work of his hands, without faith.

Experiencing Christ Commentary teaches that God respects offerings that point to Christ as our substitute. Cain’s way represents natural religion and self-effort, while Abel’s way represents faith in Christ’s sacrifice. Worship acceptable to God must be in Christ, not in ourselves.

Main Points:

  • Abel’s offering was by faith; Cain’s was by works.
  • God accepts offerings that point to Christ.
  • True worship acknowledges Christ as the only sacrifice.

Cross References:

  • Hebrews 11:4 – Abel offered a better sacrifice by faith.
  • 1 John 3:12 – Cain was evil; Abel righteous.
  • Isaiah 1:11–17 – Empty sacrifices are rejected.
  • John 1:29 – Christ, the Lamb of God.
  • Romans 12:1 – Offer yourselves as living sacrifices.

Prayer Points:

Lord, purify my worship to be in faith, not self-effort.

Keep me from presenting what is of myself.

Let Christ be my acceptable offering to You.

Teach me to worship You in spirit and truth.

May my life be an offering pleasing in Your sight, Amen.
