Devotional 249: The Birth of Cain and Abel

Genesis 4:1–2; Psalm 127:3; John 1:13; Galatians 4:28

Eve bore Cain and said, “I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.” Later she bore Abel. Cain, the firstborn, was expected by Eve to be the fulfillment of God’s promise in Genesis 3:15, but her hope was misplaced. Abel, whose name means “breath” or “vanity,” reflected the frailty of human life.

Experiencing Christ Commentary shows us that while human birth is from the Lord (Psalm 127:3), true spiritual birth is not by human will but by God (John 1:13).

Those who belong to Christ are born of promise, like Isaac (Galatians 4:28). This passage sets the stage for the conflict between natural effort (Cain) and life by promise (Abel).

Main Points:

  • Eve expected human effort (Cain) to fulfill God’s promise.
  • Abel’s name reminds us of man’s frailty apart from God.
  • True life is by God’s promise, not by man’s strength.

Cross References:

  • Genesis 3:15 – The promise of the Seed.
  • Psalm 127:3 – Children are a heritage from the Lord.
  • John 1:13 – Born of God, not of flesh or human will.
  • Galatians 4:28 – Children of promise.
  • James 1:17 – Every good gift comes from above.

Prayer Points:

Lord, thank You for being the source of true life.

Deliver me from trusting in my natural strength.

Make me a child of promise, born of the Spirit.

Teach me to see every blessing as from You.

Lord, help me to raise the next generation in Your purpose, Amen.
