Devotional 233: The Seventh Day and God’s Rest

Genesis 2:1–3; Exodus 20:11; Hebrews 4:9–10; Matthew 11:28–30

After six days of creation, God finished His work and rested on the seventh day. This rest was not due to tiredness but because His purpose in creation was fulfilled. God sanctified and blessed the seventh day as a testimony of His satisfaction.

Spiritually, this points us to Christ as our Sabbath rest. Hebrews 4:9–10 declares, “There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works, as God did from His.” True rest is not found in human effort or toil but in Christ, who says, “Come to Me…and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

The seventh day reveals God’s desire for man not to begin with work but with rest in Him. Our Christian life begins not with laboring to please God but with resting in Christ’s finished work.

Main Points:

  • God rested because His purpose in creation was fulfilled.
  • The seventh day was sanctified and blessed as a testimony of satisfaction.

  • The Christian life begins with rest, not with labor.
