Devotional 234: The Generations of the Heavens and the Earth

Genesis 2:4; Isaiah 45:18; John 1:3; Revelation 21:1

Genesis 2:4 begins a new section: “These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created.” This phrase marks the transition from God’s creation to His dealing with man, the centerpiece of His purpose.

The heavens and the earth were not created aimlessly but for God’s plan. Isaiah 45:18 declares that God did not create the earth to be empty but formed it to be inhabited. John 1:3 tells us that all things were made through Christ, and Revelation 21:1 shows that God’s plan will culminate in a new heaven and a new earth.

This verse reminds us that creation has meaning and direction—it points to God’s eternal purpose, which centers on Christ and the church.
