Devotional 271: The Earth Filled with Violence

Genesis 6:11–13; Psalm 14:2–3; Isaiah 59:7–8; Romans 3:15–17

The record declares: “The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.” Humanity had not only been corrupted inwardly by sin but was also expressing that corruption outwardly in violence, bloodshed, and lawlessness.

God announced to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence through them.” Experiencing Christ Commentary reveals that corruption begins in the heart, but when unchecked, it always manifests in society.

What begins as inward lust becomes outward violence. Satan’s goal was to fill the earth with rebellion so that God would have no way to accomplish His purpose. Yet God responded by preparing a way of salvation through Noah.

This is also a picture of today’s world: the more mankind rejects God, the more society is marked by violence, oppression, and injustice. God’s government cannot allow this to continue forever; He must bring judgment. But those who are in Christ, like Noah in the ark, are preserved by grace.

Main Points:

  • Sin corrupts inwardly and manifests outwardly in violence.
  • God’s holiness demands judgment when corruption fills the earth.
  • Even in judgment, God prepares a way of salvation.

Cross References:

  • Psalm 14:2–3 – None do good; all are corrupt.
  • Isaiah 59:7–8 – Their feet run to evil and shed innocent blood.
  • Romans 3:15–17 – Destruction and misery mark their ways.
  • Matthew 24:37 – As in the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
  • Habakkuk 2:17 – Violence covers the earth.

Prayer Points:

Lord, preserve me from the spirit of violence.

Keep my heart from corruption in this age.

Lord, anchor me in Christ as the ark of salvation.

Make me a testimony of peace and righteousness.

Remind me daily that judgment is near but grace is sufficient, Amen.
