Devotional 227: The Sun, Moon, and Stars

Genesis 1:14–19; Psalm 136:7–9; John 1:9; Philippians 2:15

On the fourth day, God set the great lights in the heavens: the sun to rule the day, the moon to rule the night, and the stars to shine. These lights were not only for illumination but also for signs, seasons, days, and years.

Spiritually, the sun represents Christ as the greater light, the source of all true illumination (John 1:9). The moon signifies the church, which reflects the light of Christ in the midst of the night of this age. The stars represent the overcoming saints who shine as luminaries in a dark world (Philippians 2:15).

The lights in the heavens remind us that God’s economy depends on Christ as our light, the church reflecting His light, and the believers shining as testimonies in the world.

Main Points:

  • The sun signifies Christ as the greater light.
  • The moon typifies the church reflecting Christ’s light.
  • The stars represent the overcoming believers as witnesses in darkness.
  • God orders times and seasons through the lights He has set.

Lord Jesus, be my sun to govern my day with Your light.

Cause the church to reflect Your glory in this age of darkness.

Lord, make me a star shining brightly in the midst of a crooked generation.

Teach me to live under Your divine order of times and seasons.

Let my life testify of Christ as the true Light, Amen.
