Devotional 226: The Grass, Herbs, and Fruit Trees

Genesis 1:11–13; John 12:24; Galatians 5:22–23; Matthew 7:16–20

On the third day of creation, God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself.” Immediately, vegetation sprang forth—grass for covering, herbs for seed, and trees for fruit. This unveiling of life on the earth marks the first appearance of living things in Genesis.

Spiritually, this shows us the beginning of life in God’s economy. Grass represents the freshness and tender beginning of divine life within us. Herbs bearing seed signify reproduction—life that multiplies and spreads. The fruit trees symbolize maturity and the expression of Christ’s life that nourishes others. The seed within each plant indicates that God’s life is self-propagating and never ends.

John 12:24 shows that life comes through death and resurrection: the grain of wheat must fall into the ground and die to bear much fruit. Galatians 5:22–23 reveals that the fruit of the Spirit is Christ’s life expressed in us. Matthew 7:16–20 emphasizes that true believers are known by their fruit.

Thus, God’s intention is not only to put life in us but to see that life grow, reproduce, and bear fruit that feeds others.

Main Points:

  • The third day unveils the principle of life springing forth in stages: grass (beginning), herbs (multiplication), fruit trees (maturity).
  • The divine life has the power of reproduction within itself.
  • God desires that His life in us matures to bear fruit that expresses Christ.

Deliver me from barrenness; make me fruitful in every good work.

Let the fruit of the Spirit overflow in my life as a testimony of Christ, Amen.
