Devotional 207: The Anointing – The Indwelling Compound Spirit

The anointing that we experience as Christians is not just a simple influence or feeling; it is the moving and working of the indwelling compound Spirit, who is fully typified by the anointing oil described in Exodus 30:23-25. The anointing oil in the Old Testament is a type of the compound Spirit, composed of various ingredients mixed together in a specific ratio, representing the diverse yet unified nature of the Spirit.

This compound Spirit is not just one characteristic of God; He is the entire essence of the Godhead—Father, Son, and Spirit, blended together to become our anointing. As believers, we are in the anointing because we are in the Anointed One, Jesus Christ. Our union with Christ means that we share in His anointing, which is the Spirit’s full presence within us, teaching, guiding, and empowering us.

The anointing is not just a passive presence; it is active, moving, and working within us to teach us and transform us. First John 2:27 makes it clear that we do not need mere human teaching, because the anointing within us is more than sufficient to guide us. This anointing is truth, and as we abide in it, it leads us into all truth.

Main Points:

  • The Compound Spirit: The anointing is the moving and working of the indwelling compound Spirit, fully typified by the anointing oil in Exodus.
  • Union with Christ: Because we are in Christ, we are in the anointing, sharing in the Spirit’s fullness.
  • The Anointing Teaches: The anointing does not just empower us but teaches us concerning all things.
  • Abiding in the Anointing: As we abide in the anointing, we experience the continuous working of the Spirit in our lives.

Reflection/Activity:

Take a moment to reflect on the significance of the compound Spirit within you. Consider how the Spirit works in your life to teach, guide, and empower you. How can you more consciously abide in the anointing today?

Prayer Confessions:

Lord, thank You for the anointing that is the presence of the compound Spirit within me.

I pray that I would increasingly understand and experience the fullness of the anointing in my daily life.

Lord, may the anointing continue to teach me and guide me into all truth.

Help me to abide in the anointing, resting in Your presence and following the Spirit’s lead.

I ask that Your Spirit would move and work within me, transforming me into the image of Christ, Amen.
