Genesis 5:1–2; Romans 5:12; 1 Corinthians 15:22; Colossians 3:10
Genesis 5 begins with “the book of the generations of Adam.” Man was created in God’s likeness, yet after the fall he bore a corrupted image.
The genealogy that follows repeats the tragic refrain “and he died.” This chapter is a solemn record of the spread of death through mankind.
Experiencing Christ Commentary teaches that in Adam all die (1 Cor. 15:22), but in Christ all are made alive. Even in this chapter, the hidden thread of God’s purpose points to the coming of the last Adam, Christ, who brings life where Adam brought death.
Main Points:
- Genesis 5 records Adam’s fallen generations.
- In Adam, humanity inherits sin and death.
- Christ, the last Adam, renews us into God’s image.
Cross References:
- Romans 5:12 – Sin and death entered through one man.
- 1 Corinthians 15:22 – In Adam all die; in Christ all live.
- Colossians 3:10 – Renewed in the image of Christ.
- Hebrews 9:27 – Man appointed once to die.
- John 11:25 – Christ the resurrection and the life.
Prayer Points:
Lord, remind me that apart from You I am in Adam’s death.
Thank You for making me alive in Christ.
Renew me daily into Your image.
Keep me from living in the old man; make me live in Christ.
Fill me with resurrection hope beyond death, Amen.
