Devotional 220: The Spirit Moving Upon the Waters

Genesis 1:2; John 3:5-6; Romans 8:2, 9-11; 2 Corinthians 3:17

Genesis 1:2 describes the earth as “formless and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep,” but the Spirit of God was brooding, hovering, and moving upon the surface of the waters. This reveals a spiritual principle: though man’s condition may be dark, empty, and chaotic, the Spirit of God is always present, ready to move and bring forth life.

The brooding Spirit in Genesis is a picture of the Spirit of life in the New Testament (Romans 8:2, 11). Just as a mother bird broods over her eggs to impart life, so the Spirit hovers over our inner chaos to produce Christ in us. John 3:5-6 shows that new birth is by water and the Spirit, while 2 Corinthians 3:17 reminds us that where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
This verse unveils that transformation does not begin with human effort but with the Spirit’s moving. When the Spirit moves upon our dark and empty situations, light, life, and order begin to emerge.

Main Points

  • The Spirit of God moves in the midst of darkness and emptiness.
  • His moving brings life, light, and divine order.
