Deuteronomy 8:7-9
“For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig trees and pomegranates; a land of olive trees and honey; a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing.”
Colossians 2:6-7
“As therefore you have received the Christ, Jesus the Lord, walk in Him, having been rooted and being built up in Him, and being established in the faith, even as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”
In the Old Testament, the good land typifies the all-inclusive Christ as the source and supply for God’s people. This land is described with vivid imagery—brooks of water, fountains, wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and more—all representing various aspects of Christ’s riches for our enjoyment and experience.
Brooks, Fountains, and Springs: These signify the flowing of the Spirit as our refreshment and satisfaction. Just as water sustains life in the natural realm, the Spirit gives life to our spirit, soul, and body.
Wheat and Barley: These grains depict Christ as the incarnated One, who was crucified and resurrected. Wheat represents His life-giving death, and barley signifies His resurrection power that feeds and sustains us.
Vines and Fig Trees: The vine symbolizes Christ as our joy and satisfaction, while the fig tree represents the sweetness and comfort we receive in Him.
Olive Trees and Honey: The olive tree represents the Spirit’s anointing, and honey signifies the sweetness of experiencing Christ in our daily living.
When the children of Israel entered the good land, they needed to labor on it to enjoy its riches. Similarly, we must actively apply and experience Christ. This involves prayer, fellowship, and immersion in God’s Word, allowing His riches to fill us and transform us. By doing so, we experience the all-inclusive Christ, and our lives become a testimony of His abundance.
Thought of the day/Main Points:
– The good land is a full type of Christ as our supply and inheritance.
– Each aspect of the land’s description points to specific riches of Christ for our experience.
– We labor on the land by exercising our spirit, studying the Word, and living in fellowship.
– Experiencing Christ as the good land builds us into God’s dwelling place.
