Genesis 8:6–12; Song of Songs 2:14; John 1:32; Galatians 5:16–17
Noah sent out a raven, which went back and forth until the waters dried. He also sent out a dove, which found no resting place and returned. Later, the dove came back with an olive leaf, and finally it did not return, showing that the earth was habitable again.
Experiencing Christ Commentary draws a contrast: the raven, feeding on corpses, represents the unclean and the flesh, which thrives in death and corruption.
The dove, clean and gentle, signifies the Holy Spirit, who cannot rest in death but only in new creation. The olive leaf signifies peace, life, and resurrection.
For the believer, this teaches us that the flesh is comfortable with corruption, but the Spirit seeks only life and peace. Our walk must be by the Spirit, not by the flesh.
Main Points:
- The raven represents the flesh, which feeds on corruption.
- The dove represents the Spirit, resting only in life.
- The olive leaf symbolizes resurrection peace and new creation.
