Devotional 256: Cain’s City

Genesis 4:16–17; Psalm 127:1; Hebrews 11:10; 1 John 2:15–17

Cain left God’s presence and built a city, naming it after his son.

Experiencing Christ Commentary reveals that Cain sought security and identity apart from God. This was the birth of human civilization without God’s presence.

In contrast, Abraham looked for the city whose builder is God (Heb. 11:10).

Main Points:

  • Cain left God’s presence to build his own city.
  • Civilization without God is man’s substitute for Him.
  • True security is found only in God’s city.

Cross References:

  • Psalm 127:1 – Unless the Lord builds.
  • Hebrews 11:10 – Abraham looked for God’s city.
  • Revelation 21:2 – New Jerusalem.
  • 1 John 2:15–17 – The world is passing away.
  • Proverbs 14:12 – A way that seems right ends in death.

Prayer Points:

Lord, keep me from building life without You.

Make me a citizen of Your heavenly city.

Draw me back to Your presence.

Deliver me from pride in human achievement.

Build me on Christ, the true foundation, Amen.
