Devotional 240: The Woman Built from the Man

Genesis 2:21–25; Ephesians 5:25–27, 31–32; Revelation 19:7

God caused Adam to sleep, took one of his ribs, and built it into a woman. When Adam saw her, he said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” The woman was brought to the man, and together they became one flesh.

Spiritually, this reveals a profound mystery. Just as Eve came out of Adam, so the church comes out of Christ. The deep sleep of Adam foreshadows the death of Christ, from whose pierced side flowed blood and water (John 19:34)—the means by which the church was produced.

Ephesians 5:25–27 shows that Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her, sanctifying and presenting her glorious. Revelation 19:7 unveils the church as the Bride prepared for Christ.

Main Points:

  • Eve was built from Adam’s side, typifying the church coming out of Christ.
  • Adam’s deep sleep prefigures Christ’s death and the birth of the church.
  • The marriage union foreshadows Christ and the church as one.

Prayer Points:

Lord, thank You for building the church from Your side.

Keep me always in the realization that I am part of Your Bride.

Lord, sanctify me to be prepared for Your coming.

May my union with You be deep and living every day.

Cause the church to be ready as the Bride for the marriage of the Lamb, Amen.
