Devotional 281: The Waters of Judgment

Genesis 7:10–12; Isaiah 28:17; 2 Peter 3:6–7; 1 Peter 3:20–21

After seven days, the fountains of the deep were broken, the windows of heaven opened, and rain fell for forty days and nights. The entire earth was engulfed in judgment.

Experiencing Christ Commentary shows that the flood was God’s governmental judgment upon corruption. The water from below and from above signify total judgment, leaving no escape.

Yet for those in the ark, the same waters of judgment became the waters of salvation. This prefigures baptism — the judgment on the old man but also the deliverance into Christ (1 Pet. 3:20–21).

Main Points:

  • The flood was God’s total judgment on sin and corruption.
  • Waters from above and below signify judgment with no escape.
  • In Christ, judgment becomes salvation through baptism.

Cross References:

  • Isaiah 28:17 – Hail will sweep away the refuge of lies.
  • 2 Peter 3:6–7 – The world then perished by water; next by fire.
  • 1 Peter 3:20–21 – Baptism prefigured by Noah’s ark.
  • Romans 6:4 – Buried with Him in baptism, raised to new life.
  • Revelation 20:12–15 – Final judgment at the throne.

Prayer Points:

Lord, save me from judgment by hiding me in Christ.

Thank You for baptism into Christ as my ark.

Keep me from trusting in false refuges.

Lord, preserve me through waters of trial in Your grace.

Anchor me in the assurance that there is no condemnation in Christ, Amen.
