Devotional 224: The Firmament—Dividing the Waters

Genesis 1:6-7; Psalm 19:1; Isaiah 55:9; John 7:37-39

God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” The firmament—later called “heaven”—represents the separating expanse between the waters above and the waters beneath.

Spiritually, this reveals that God establishes a separation between what is heavenly and what is earthly. Just as heaven is higher than the earth (Isaiah 55:9), so God calls us to live in the higher realm of His Spirit, not merely in the lower realm of fleshly living.

The “waters above” symbolize the heavenly supply of the Spirit (John 7:37-39), while the “waters below” speak of earthly chaos. The firmament testifies of God’s order in creation and in our spiritual life—lifting us to live in Christ, seated with Him in the heavenlies (Ephesians 2:6).

Main Points:

  • The firmament signifies the separation between the heavenly and the earthly.
  • God calls believers to live in the heavenly realm of the Spirit.
  • The waters above picture the Spirit’s supply; the waters below represent earthly chaos.

Cross References:

  • Psalm 19:1 – The heavens declare the glory of God.
  • Isaiah 55:9 – As the heavens are higher than the earth.

Prayer Points:

Lord, lift me to live in the heavenly realm with You.

Separate me from the earthly chaos and distractions.

Fill me with the waters above—the supply of the Spirit.

Cause my life to declare Your glory like the heavens.

Lord, help me to set my mind on things above and not on earthly things, Amen.
